Lake of Bays is Cottage Country

The Lake of Bays area is located in the northeast corner of the District of Muskoka. The area offers a natural landscape of forests, rocks, lakes and wetlands. It is a popular cottage area attracting visitors world-wide. The three small communities in this township are Dwight, Baysville and Dorset. All are located on the lake and can be reached by boat. The township has a permanent population of about 3000 and seasonal population of 18000.

Lake of Bays is a favourite all season destination for recreationists and sports enthusiasts. It is ideal for swimming, fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking, waterskiing, sailing, hiking, cycling, mountain biking, golfing, alpine and nordic skiing, skating, snowmobiling, ice fishing and dog sledding. Its natural, pristine and serene environment also make it perfect for a quiet relaxing getaway.

The scenery is one of steep forested hills falling to sandy shorelines. Lake of Bays takes its name from the curved shoreline created by its many bays. The shoreline stretches about 560 km (350 miles).

The Oxtongue River opens into Lake of Bays near Dwight. You can boat or canoe a great distance up the river and end up at the foot of the Oxtongue falls. The entire shoreline consists of beautiful natural terrain, sandbanks and wetlands. It's a great sanctuary for many species of birds. It is spectacular in the fall after the leaves have turned colour.

Lake of Bays has a romantic historic past. It is home of Bigwin Inn which dates back to the 1920's. It was the largest tourist resort in Ontario from 1920 to 1969. Today it is home to a world class golf course that attracts the rich and famous from around the world. The original buildings have been restored and can be enjoyed as you circle the lake's largest island by boat.
